Top 5 Holiday Movies That Aren’t Holiday Movies http://1071radio.com/porkroll-and-eggs/top-5-holiday-movies-that-arent-holiday-movies http://1071radio.com/porkroll-and-eggs/top-5-holiday-movies-that-arent-holiday-movies#respond Mon, 22 Dec 2014 17:50:26 +0000 http://1071radio.com/?p=12832 Read More]]> That’s right, though it may not seem like a typical Christmas movie, this is the time of year we get to enjoy some of our favorite movies set around or during the holiday season, but have absolutely nothing to do with them at all. Here is a list of our favorite holiday movies that aren’t holiday movies, Yippie Ki-Ay *&#@!!

5. Trading Places

“Say man when I was growing up, if we wanted to jacuzzi, we would fart in the tub”- Billy Ray Valentine

It seemed like any time SNL cast members teamed up for a movie in the 80s, it was comedic gold. And nothing about Trading Places rebukes that argument.

Dan Akroyds snobbish brokerage character of Louis Winthorpe III and Eddie Murphy’s portrayal of Billy Ray Valentine are incredibly hilarious to watch as they essentially switch places in life and test the argument of “nature vs nurture” put forth by the Duke Brothers.

4. Edward Scissorhands

The story itself is one that’s been told for ages. The misunderstood “monster” that becomes accepted and then later chastised by the same people who at one point had come to accept him. Alienation, friendship and love are all central themes to Edward Scissorhands, while the music of Danny Elfman connects us even more to the film and feelings throughout it. These simple nuances are just some of the things that keep us coming back to appreciate this film more and more this time of year.

3. Gremlins

 • Keep it out of light
 • Don’t let it get wet
 • Don’t feed after midnight

Break these rules for taking care of a Mogwai, and you get Gremlins. From tying up dogs, burning down parts of the town, finding the time to dress up as carolers and all gather for a relaxing matinee movie, the Gremlins come close to ruining Christmas for everyone.

If you’re looking for a movie of filled with laughs, love, adventure and a Phoebe Cates monologue describing her extremely depressing story of how her father broke his neck and died in her chimney trying to act like Santa Clause, well then Gremlins is the movie for you and why it ranks number 3 on our list.

2. Batman Returns

There is only one Batman. And that is Michael Keaton (Sorry Adam West).

Batman Returns has everything from pseudo-Rockefeller tree lightings that unleash a flock of bats, Ice Queens dying, the kidnapping of Gotham’s first born sons on Christmas Eve and yet another holiday alone for poor Bruce Wayne, this film has everything and nothing to do with the holiday season all in one sitting. Toss in an unstable schizophrenic Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Christopher Walken as the evil tycoon Max Schreck and Paul Reubens cameo as the Penguins father, and you’ve got yourself a Holiday film to enjoy for the ages and why it is number two on our list.

1. Die Hard

It seems every year after Thanksgiving has come and gone it is this film more than some of the holiday classics that we look forward to watching. And with good reason.

Bruce Willis is the bad ass NYC cop, John McLain, who just can’t seem to go anywhere during the holiday season without having to stop some group of terrorist from completely ruining it for him.

Hans Gruber and his band of misfit terrorists that decide they really need to get themselves $640 million in non-negotiable bearer bonds by hijacking the Nakatomi building and holding everyone in it hostage, including McLain’s estranged wife, Holly. Not a good idea as Hans Gruber and his misfits later find out.

There are so many one-liners and parts to touch on that this could go on for pages, but Like I said earlier, nothing says the holidays, more or less, than turning on your TV and seeing Bruce Willis blowing things up.

Honorable Mentions:

 • Rocky
 • Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
 • Friday After Next
 • American Psycho
 • Citizen Kane
 • Better Off Dead
 • 12 Monkeys
 • First Blood
 • Ghostbusters 2
 • Lethal Weapon
 • Catch Me If You Can

Teacher Fired For Taking Kids On Ride In Car Trunk http://1071radio.com/porkroll-and-eggs/teacher-fired-for-taking-kids-on-ride-in-car-trunk http://1071radio.com/porkroll-and-eggs/teacher-fired-for-taking-kids-on-ride-in-car-trunk#respond Mon, 22 Dec 2014 16:21:57 +0000 http://1071radio.com/?p=13189 Read More]]> A middle school teacher in Oklahoma has been fired after she put students into her car trunk to run an errand.

Heather Cagle allegedly packed 11 of her students into her Honda Accord for a trip to Walmart for snacks. Seven of the kids piled into the backseat, two rode in front, and two 12-year-old girls were locked in the trunk.

While an attorney for Catoosa Public Schools called the act “mental abuse”, Cagle’s lawyer says the teacher merely violated a seatbelt law, and pointed out she didn’t force any of the children into the car.

The board voted to fire the teacher, who has been working for the school since 2005.

The only problem is that her dog is still alive.

Attorney, Doug Denmure, said Connie Lay’s will stipulates Bela must be euthanized, cremated and buried with her or sent to an animal shelter in Utah.“

“Lay made provisions that in the event of her death, she wanted her very close friend to take charge of the dog,” Denmure said. “…She also then requested that the dog be put to sleep, cremated and that the dog’s ashes be placed with her own ashes.”

Right now, the dog’s fate is in the hands of Lay’s friends and no decision has been made.

The dog, Bela, is being housed at PAWS of Dearborn County Humane Center in Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
